Chapter Twelve

Liam

I was sleeping—what a Goddamn miracle.

I was actually getting some much-needed rest without even an empty bottle to show for it when my dreams got weird.

Olivia was looking at me. She was somehow a teenager and also nearly thirty, and I couldn’t pinpoint her age. We were on some kind of sport’s field, but there were no bleachers, just painted white lines in the grass that I couldn’t quite recognize.

She said something to me, but I couldn’t hear what it was. It was like she was mumbling, or maybe the wind blew a little harder when she spoke, but I couldn’t make any sense of what she might be saying.

“What?” I asked.

She looked frantic, and even though we were outside on a sunny, warm day, I could hear the sound of wind whipping around us even as her hair and that white dress with the little yellow flowers stayed perfectly still.

She didn’t answer my question, but her eyes looked concerned. She looked like she didn’t know what she meant to tell me, and when she opened her mouth to shout through the sound of the vicious wind, all that came out was a shrill ringing.

I woke up abruptly, startled, with my heart pounding, and with a clammy sheen of sweat on my skin. My phone was ringing from across the room, and without being fully aware of my surroundings, I leaped out of bed and grabbed my phone, answering before my brain had caught up to my body.

“Liam LeBlanc, LeBlanc Enterprises,” I answered as I always did.

“Liam, it’s me,” came a vaguely familiar voice from the other end. ‘I-I didn’t know who else to call.”

I was trying to place the person, but she sounded so much like someone I was sure I loved once. The words evoked a pang in my chest, and I was struggling to breathe until it hit me. I knew who was on the line.

“Sarah?”
